A downloadable game

I wanted to see how much mechanical density I could fit into a one-page solo dungeon crawler.

This one-page PDF has:

  • Dungeon mapping
  • Character and enemy stats
  • Traps
  • Multiple dungeon floors
  • A town you can visit to rest
  • A spell system
  • Consumables and treasure
  • Combat with initiative, opposed rolls, critical hits, critical defences
  • Combat against multiple enemies
  • Fleeing combat
  • Death-saving rolls
  • Levelling up for you and enemies
  • An end-goal and a final boss

I've also uploaded "More Dense Dungeon", which is a one-and-a-half-page PDF that adds the following:

  • Hit locations in combat
  • Some enemies are weak to hit locations
  • Armour you can wear to protect hit locations
  • An improved weapon in the item list
  • Character classes
  • Quests you can take on before you delve into the dungeon
  • You can buy and sell items in town
  • The room layout/type/contents system has been reworked so the chances of different room types, and enemy encounters, are changed

Enemies do not drop loot, is that correct?

The combat is very satisfying for such a tiny game!

That’s correct. But that is a mechanic I could add to make it more dense.

Did you find that you didn’t get much loot with the 1-in-6 chance?

First try - zero loot. Second try about 1/9 rooms had loot. I prefer scarce loot, so I’m happy with the odds. My own game is 1/6 chest room odds with 1/6 mimic or 1/6 empty depending on character.

One more question: The Items list goes up to 8. I assume that means a d8 is used. Or when you get 2 rolls in a 3x3 room that means add 2d6 rolls together?

Yes a d8 for the item list. I forgot to add it in parentheses. Also the two rolls means you roll the die twice to get two items. I’ll make that clearer.

Cool. Only other thing I would suggest is the ladder/stairs frequency be on the same roll as a 50/50? But honestly, having fun with it as it is. My son managed to get 7 STR on level 1 and is having a blast.

Ha, I'm not sure how I'd fit the explanation for the split 1-in-6 roll on to the page. Do you find that one of them happens too often? And what do you think should be more common out of the remaining 5 options?

Great little game for a train ride or similar situation! Maybe even during a boring meeting at work using electronic dice on your phone ;-)

Hey, thanks for the comment. Let me know if you have spot any issues.
